Humour Is Critical

“Humour is critical” – a foundational piece of our Foxy manifesto, it’s one of our core values and a belief we built our brand on.  You may be wondering what role humour has to play in a salon setting… “what’s so funny about hair removal,” you might be thinking to yourself.  Well today we’re going to discuss why this value is so important to us, and why we infuse humour into everything we do.  Read on to learn about the magic power of laughter!

Jokes are my love language…  

As Vagicians, our job is to cultivate a comfortable environment while providing a service that can sometimes feel very UNcomfortable. We want every person that steps into our shops to feel safe, welcomed and appreciated.  So we embrace our goofy side, because we believe that humour is the best vehicle for making authentic connections and forming a bond with our clients.  And our friends in the science world agree!  Research shows that laughter contagiously forms social bonds, like a game of endorphin dominoes!  Do you ever find yourself giggling with a friend even when you’re not sure you understand the joke?  The endorphin effect of laughter triggers the same response in others, promoting feelings of togetherness and comfort (which explains why there’s nothing more magnetic than a person who can laugh at themselves).  We want everyone to feel at home in a fun and inclusive environment.

Laughter may actually be the best medicine…  

In his article about the powerful benefits of humour, Lawrence Robinson wrote, “a good, hearty laugh relieves physical tension and stress, leaving your muscles relaxed for up to 45 minutes after”.  What does this have to do with hair removal?  We recommend that clients come to their appointments as relaxed as possible because when you tense up, the muscles around your hair follicles tighten, making the process more difficult (and more uncomfortable).  Having a giggle while you’re getting your treatment done can actually decrease the uncomfortable sensations you might experience.  

Not only does laughter relax any tension in your body, it can also lessen painful sensations.  The results of another recent scientific study show that pain thresholds are significantly higher after laughter.  So in a very real way, laughter can be medicine!  And perhaps the best thing you can do while getting a Brazilian, is share a laugh with your technician. 

What’s the point if we’re not having fun…

To recap: laughter helps humans create connections, it eases tension and can decrease physical pain sensations, and it makes for a more joyful work environment!  At the end of the day, we want to enjoy coming into work, and we want our clients to look forward to their appointments.  Humour is a wonderful way to diffuse stress, and it allows us to lighten up and not take anything (including ourselves) too seriously.  We believe that there’s room for heart and humour in business, and we believe that there’s room for lightness and laughter in the beauty industry.  And by bringing a joyful and light-hearted approach to our work, we hope to create a more inviting and inclusive space, in an industry that can sometimes feel intimidating.  From the slogans in our treatment rooms to our cheeky little logo, if we’ve made you smile, we’ve done our job right.
